This the home page and syllabus for the Folsom Lake College Center 3 unit course in Health Science HEED 300 to be used with related resources. Review the online supplementary orientation page at www.flc.losrios.edu/~klimes/orientation.htm. Read the course assignment page with all relevant dates for the course at www.flc.losrios.edu/~klimes/assign.htm. The in-person orientation on campus is highly recommended but not required. If you have is a major conflict, email the professor. The prerequisites for this course are a working knowledge of the internet and email and one-year experience online. This course applies to a degree at Folsom Lake College and generally may be transferred to other colleges or universities. As the online platform, we are using Desire2Learn and would like to ask you to go to www.d2l.losrios.edu and follow the instruction.

for personal and community-wide disease prevention and wellness.
B. Course Description
The aim of Health Science HEED 300 is to help you achieve a high level of wellness and prevent disease by assisting you to maximize both your personal lifestyles and your environment. This course will help you identify the various factors influencing your current and future levels of wellness. Information presented will include, but not be exclusive to, mental health, stress management, nutrition, weight control, fitness, sexuality, addictive substances, and disease.
The course is 3 units.
C. Course Information
The course uses a textbook, Desire2Learn, online web-pages and email. Expect to think critically. The normal college course rigor of study. Write and edit your submissions to fit good written style. Do not engage in physical activities for this course that may be considered strenuous and that pose a risk of injury. All physical activities are the full responsibility of the student and the College does not carry medical insurance for any injuries which may occur. If you have any doubt about your ability to exercise, obtain a medical clearance from you physician first.
Health Science HEED 300 is offered by the Health Education Department of Folsom Lake College, Folsom, CA by Rudolf E. Klimes, PhD (Indiana U), MPH (John Hopkins U), Adjunct Professor of Health. The required textbook is An Invitation to Health, by Dianne Hales, 2009-2010 Edition, Wadsworth Publishing Company.
The course is transferable to UC/CSU. There are no assignments due on President's day, February 16, and April 6, Easter.

The assignment must always be posted via Digital Drop Box. The instructor returns the work via digital drop box with a grade and comments usually within 24-48 hours. The dates given on the assignment web site are due dates after which the work may be counted as late and discounted. You are encouraged to submit the assignment anytime in the preceding week.
By the date indicated in the assignment web page, submit by digital drop box the assignment for the first module as indicated below. With the first assignment, also post the category you would like to select for your discussion group and your project: A. Fitness (If you want to improve your physical fitness, go here) , B. Eating (If you are interested in nutrition or are overweight, go here), C3. Smoking (If you are using tobacco, harmful drugs, or excessive alcohol, go here).

Every posting and email to the professor needs to give the following in the subject line: 1) your first and last name, and 2) the module number (A1, A2 etc) that you are submitting, in that order. If you cannot find the needed help in the textbook or online, email the instructor to klimesr@flc.losrios.edu with questions and problems. All course assignments are submitted via D2L.
E. Grading
Grades given are A (excellent, 91-100%), B (good, 81-90), C (satisfactory, 71-80), D (passing, less than satisfactory, 61-70), F (failing, 0-60). To receive an A or "excellent", students must include in their answers unique and insightful components that show a deeper grasp of the assignment. The normal or minimum fulfillment of the assignment may be graded as a B or C.
The grades of late assignments may be lowered 10% a day for a maximum of 3 days, which means that a 3-day-or-more late assignment will receive a 30% lower grade. In this course there are no contracts for grades, no make-up exams, no open-book tests, no re-taking of exams, and no extra credit for extra work. Grades are posted on D2L weekly, usually by Friday. If for some good reason you cannot submit things on time, request and obtain an excuse from the professor ahead of time by email.

The course is taught by Adjunct professor Rudolf Klimes, PhD, MPH. If you have computer problems, mail the assignment postmarked the assigned day to R. Klimes, Box 1178, Folsom CA 94763.
