Academic Info: An in-depth, scholarly directory of the best and most useful links and resources within specific subject areas. The subject guides also take into account website accessability and authorative sources as they relate to respective subject matter.

 

Awesome Library: This database provides resources that have been reviewed and selected because of their usefulness and appropriateness. The development of this library has been supported with federal funds in order to offer selected sites through a web portal. Major topics include: The arts, humanities, english, mathematics, science, sociology, and education. Also included is a varied list of "Hot Topics".

 

Best Information on the Net: Best academic subject index to thousands of links on the web, prepared by the St. Ambrose University Librarians.

 

Cal Poly Pomona University Library: "The websites listed have been selected by the Subject Specialist Librarians at Cal Poly Pomona."

 

Cal State Universty Library: A very thorough Research Guide to a list of broad subject categories prepared by the CSU Long Beach Librarians.

 

Chaffey College Library: The librarians at the Chaffey College Library have provided a list of links in the arts, business & applied technology, education, careers & college, general reference, government & politics, language & literature, law & justice, physical & life sciences, health sciences, social & behavorial sciences as well as a guide to evaluating web pages.  

 

City College of San Francisco Library: "A very comprehensive guide to webliographies and bibliographies as well as access to internet resources available through subject links. The UC Berkeley librarians have also developed a tutorial which is available on this site for finding information on the Internet."

 

Columbia University Guides: A comprehensive list of subjects linking to targeted resource guides and Internet pathfinders selected by CU Library staff. Some of the resources are available only to current faculty, staff and students of Columbia University, but many others are available free of charge. This selection is well worth browsing for scholarly research material.

 

Digital Librarian: Librariana: An alphabetical list of links to Internet resources maintained by Margaret Vail Anderson, a librarian in Cortland, New York. This librarian has been updating and maintaining this excellent directory since 1996.

 

Ibiblio: "Home to one of the largest "collections of collections" on the Internet, ibiblio.org is a conservancy of freely available information, including software, music, literature, art, history, science, politics, and cultural studies. ibiblio.org is a collaboration of the Center for the Public Domain and The University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill."

 

InfoMine: "INFOMINE is a virtual library of Internet resources relevant to faculty, students, and research staff at the university level. It contains useful Internet resources such as databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, mailing lists, online library card catalogs, articles, directories of researchers, and many other types of information. INFOMINE is librarian built. Librarians from The University of California, Wake Forest University, California State University, The University of Detroit - Mercy, and other universities and colleges have contributed to building INFOMINE."

 

Internet Public Library - IPL: "The Internet Public Library is hosted by the University of Michigan and edited by volunteer librarians. It has extensive subject categories with well-chosen and well-annotated sites."

 

Internet Quick Reference: "IQR is a virtual library which attempts to identify, summarize, and categorize significant Web sites applicable to the information needs of a wide number of visitors."

 

Jensen's Web Guides: Professor of history emeritus, University of Illinois, Richard Jensen's guides to history sites.

 

LibDex - The Library Index: A selected directory to Libraries in the United States, and other countries of the world. Use this site for a one-step connection to their online catalogs. Also includes indexes to Publisher's Catalogs, Library Journals, and Multiple Reference Links.

 

Libweb - Library WWW Servers: A search engine to academic and public libraries in the United States with related links to worldwide Library indexes.

 

New York Public Library: An outstanding subject guide to carefully selected links especially to the student researcher. The N.Y. Public librarians are meeting the need to pick the best sites on the Web and organize them by subject for easy access.

 

New Zealand Digital Library: This portal provides access to a large collection of documents in the Humanity Development Library; Medical and Health Library; World Environment Library; Food Nutrition, and Agricultural Library; plus Global UN collections.

 

Open Directory Project: "The Open Directory Project claims to be the largest, most comprehensive human edited directory of the Web. It provides links to sites in many different languages. You can search the entire directory or a particular category, or bump your search out to one or more major search engines. ODP is particularly strong in social sciences and technology."

 

Open J Gate: "Open J-Gate is an electronic gateway to global journal literature in open access domain. Launched in 2006, Open J-Gate is the contribution of Informatics (India) Ltd to promote OAI. Open J-Gate provides seamless access to millions of journal articles available online. Open J-Gate is also a database of journal literature, indexed from 4404 open access journals, with links to full text at Publisher sites."

 

PDF Queen: This PDF search engine delivers quick access to free, unlimited PDF searches and downloads via the Internet using Adobe Reader. In many cases the searches are provided through Google in the HTML version as well. The user may need to remove the "cache" in the Google search to get to the actual PDF document.

 

PINAKES, A Subject Launchpad: The largest, most comprehensive selection of subject portals to narrower multiple-subject gateways within specific academic disciplines. "In ancient times, the Library of Alexandria was seen as a universal store of human knowledge. As the Library grew in size, however, it became increasingly difficult to locate relevant material. The poet Callimachus solved the problem by compiling a catalogue called The Pinakes. On a far smaller scale, these Web pages hope to provide a similar function for Internet resources, by linking to the major subject gateways." Research Channel: The Research Channel provides a Video Library that houses over 3,500 titles online that can be browsed by program title, series title, or institution. The videos can also be explored by the following majore categories: Arts and Humanities; Business and Economics; Computer Sciene and Engineering; Education; Sciences and Social Sciences.

 

Sacramento City College Library: Sue Chen, The Sacramento City College Web Librarian, has provided an excellent Web Subject Guide which supports Internet research within the subject areas available throughout SCC's curriculum.

 

Santa Rosa Junior College Library Internet Reference Collection: Available links to internet resource subject listings prepared by Kathy McGreevy, Electronic Resource Librarian.

 

Scout Project: "A searchable and browseable collection of over seven years' worth of critical annotations of carefully selected sites and other online resources... The Scout Report is one of the Internet's longest-running weekly publications, offering a selection of new and newly discovered online resources of interest to researchers, educators, and anyone else with an interest in high-quality online material." The Scout Project also serves as a portal to other recommended sites with critical annotations.

 

Sonoma State University Library: These librarians have developed an extensive research guide by major subject categories including a section on research tips.

 

University of California, Berkeley "This library research guide provides links to a series of library research guides developed by the staff of the library and others, which are designed to inform students on how to use a variety of print and electronic resources."

 

University of California, Davis Library: An extensive subject guide provided by the librarians.

 

University of California, Irvine Library: An extensive subject guide provided by the librarians.

 

University of California, Santa Barbara: The UCSB Libraries have developed a very comprehensive index to subject groups in alphabetical order. Some of the databases require a UCSB library card.

 

WWW Virtual Library: "The VL is the oldest catalog of the Web, started by Tim Berners-Lee [a CERN computer scientist], the creator of html and the Web itself. Unlike commercial catalogs, it is run by a loose confederation of volunteers, who compile pages of key links for particular areas in which they are expert; even though it isn't the biggest index of the Web, the VL pages are widely recognized as being amongst the highest-quality guides to particular sections of the Web."
