    AMSER: "The Applied Math and Science Education Repository is a portal of educational resources and services built specifically for use by those in Community and Technical Colleges but free for anyone to use." Click on Science to view resources in science.

     

    Annual Reviews in the Biomedical and Physical Sciences: Free abstracts

    of articles from 1984 to present with a minimal cost for full-text articles from the latest research in the field.

     

    ASM Journals: Use the High Wire hosted Journals Search Engine to locate full-text articles or abstracts by title or alphabetical link list. Some articles are available online on a pay-per-article basis.

     

    CiteSeer: A research index to digitized scientific documents and other literature sponsored by The National Science Foundation and Nasa. Search capability provided by Google and hosted by Penn State's College of Information Sciences and Technology.

     

    Digital Library for Earth System Education: "DLESE supports Earth system science education by providing access to high-quality collections of educational resources, eEarth data sets and imagery, including the tools and interfaces that enable their effective use in educational settings. Support services are intended to help educators and learners effectively create, use, and share educational resources. Communication networks are provided to facilitate interactions and collaborations across 2 dimensions of Earth system education."

     

    Echo: Exploring & Collecting History Online: "The site incorporates the WWW Virtual Library for the History of Science, Technology, Medicine, and Industry - an index of nearly 5,000 websites, many with excerpts and annotations. Since 2001 the Echo project has used the Internet to collect and present the history of science, technology, and industry. Echo provides a centralized guide and portal for those seeking websites on the history of science and technology. This guide helps researchers find the exact information they need while also granting curious browsers a forum for exploration."

     

    Highwire Press: Imprint of the Stanford University Libraries' selected list of scientific journals, some articles which are available free in full text.

     

    History of Science: Megasite prepared by the American Institute of Physics. This site contains links to web exhibits, archival and bibliographical resources and online source material on the history of physics and allied fields.

     

    Ibiblio: "Home to one of the largest "collections of collections" on the Internet, ibiblio.org is a conservancy of freely available information, including software, music, literature, art, history, science, politics, and cultural studies. ibiblio.org is a collaboration of the Center for the Public Domain and The University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill."

     

    In-cites: "This website provides commentary and analysis on some of the most influential scientific discoveries of our time in the words of the scientists who made those discoveries. It also includes listings of highly cited and so-called hot papers across 22 broad fields, as well as baseline citation statistics to gauge whether a paper is cited above or less than average." No new content is being added to this site, but archives and new information is available at ScienceWatch.

     

    Khan Academy:The Khan Academy is a not-for-profit organization with the mission of providing a high quality education to anyone, anywhere. Available are 1200+ videos on YouTube covering everything from basic arithmetic and algebra, to differential equations, physics, chemistry, biology and finance which have been recorded by Salman Khan, the 2009 Tech Award winner in Education. The entire video library list can be accessed from the home page.

     

    Life Sciences: Excellent biological links from the Life Sciences department at the University of Illinois. Additional links are available in the study of Genetics, Virology, Microbiology, and the Genome Database.

     

    National Academies Press: "NAP publishes over 200 books a year on a wide range of topics in science, engineering, and health, capturing the most authoritative views on important issues in science and health policy."

     

    National Council for Science and the Environment: NCSE has been working since 1990 to improve the scientific basis of environmental decisionmaking. This site has been specifically designed as a portal to provide access to global resources and enable better communication with science-based information tools.

     

    National Geophysical Data Center: "This site provides scientific products and services for geophysical data describing the sea floor, solid earth and solar-terrestrial environment, including Earth observation from space."

     

    Natural History Museums And Collections: A specialized subject index to museum links worldwide with many links to scientific collections in Biology, Entomology, Zoology, Paleontology. This site is maintained by the University of Washington Libraries, Monographic Services Division.

     

    National Science Academies: This site provides the latest news from the academies in science, engineering and medicine as well as current projects and publications.

     

    National Science Foundation Classroom Resources: The Classroom Resources is a diverse collection of lessons and web resources for classroom teachers, and their students. Materials are arranged by subject area to help teachers find resources and create lesson plans.

     

    Neartica - Natural History : "This page has a list of the more common groups of plants and animals."

     

    Nobel Prize Internet Archive: "This site maintains information on all Nobel Prize winners in all categories. Click on any Nobel category (literature, physics, chemistry, peace, economics, or physiology & medicine) to see an annotated, hyperlinked list of all Nobel laureates in that category."

     

    Office of Scientific and Technical Information: "The Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information website provides access to a comprehensive resource of scientific and technical information in physics and other disciplines of concern to the Department of Energy. It includes gray literature, preprint literature, and journal articles."

     

    Philosophy of Science: Contains essays and book reviews on subjects in mathematics, space and time, and physics.

     

    Public Library of Science: "This is the web site of the Public Library of Science, a nonprofit open access publisher founded by scientists and phsysicians in October 2000. PLoS provides peer-reviewed, open access journals in biology, medicine, genetics, pathogens, and tropical diseases."

     

    Science Directory: Yahoo search engine directory to science and chemistry categories.

     

    Science.Gov: "Resources selected by various U.S. government agencies as their best science information. Two major types of information are included—selected authoritative science websites and databases of technical reports, journal articles, conference proceedings, and other published materials."

     

    Science Reference Services: Science, Technology and Business division of the Library of Congress.

     

    Science Resources On The World Wide Web: An excellent list of links to science subjects selected by the New York Public Library Librarians at the Science, Industry, and Business Library.

     

    Science Search: This specialized search engine focuses on scientific issues. Science Search finds accurate information in scientific areas.

     

    SciNet: A specialized directory and search engine covering only science subjects. It has specific subject categories in agriculture, astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, environment, math, medicine, physics, social science, technology, and more. Also provided are links to other science specific search engines.

     

    ScienceWatch: This site, updated weekly, provides a behind-the-scenes look at the scientists, journals, institutions, nations, and papers selected by Essential Science Indicators from Thomson Reuters and other products of the Research Services Group. Read interviews and first-person essays about people in a wide variety of fields and professions.

     

     

    American Academy of Arts and Sciences: "Founded in 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is an independent policy research center that conducts multidisciplinary studies of complex and emerging problems. The Academy’s elected members are leaders in the academic disciplines, the arts, business, and public affairs." Full-text access to the Academy's occasional papers are available on this website. (Especially important is the full-text PDF version of the work entitled War with Iraq: Cost, Consequences and Alternatives)

     

    American Museum of Natural History: An excellent site for previewing online exhibits in natural history.

     

    Berkeley Lab Nobel Laureates: A biographical background for the Ernest Orlanda Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Nobel prize winners from 1939 through 1986.

     

    California Council on Science and Technology: Has a mission to improve science and technology policy and application in California by proposing programs, conducting analyses, and helping government implement policies and initiatives for a better economy and quality of life.

    Einstein Archives: "The Einstein Archives Online Website provides the first online access to Albert Einstein's scientific and non-scientific manuscripts held by the Albert Einstein Archives at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and to an extensive Archival Database, constituting the material record of one of the most influential intellects in the modern era. The site allows viewing and browsing of approx. 3,000 high-quality digitized images of Einstein's writings, available for viewing in two sizes: a standard resolution image, as well as a high-resolution image for closer inspection. This digitization of more than 900 documents written by Einstein was produced by the Jewish National & University Library's Digitization Project and was made possible by generous grants of David and Fela Shapell."

     

    Federation of American Scientists: Official site for the FAS, which was formed in 1945 by atomic scientists from the Manhattan Project who felt that scientists, engineers and other innovators had an ethical obligation to bring their knowledge and experience to bear on critical national decisions, especially pertaining to the technology they unleashed - the Atomic Bomb.

     

    How Stuff Works: "The name says it all – brief, easy-to-understand explanations of how just about anything in modern life works. You can search by keyword or browse by category. There is a free email newsletter."

     

    National Geographic: "Resource for scientific discovery, travel, exploration, photography, maps, and news, featuring multimedia applications, live webcams, and educational tools from the National Geographic Society."

     

    National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration: "The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration conducts research and gathers data about the global oceans, atmosphere, space, and sun. The site is particularly useful for climate and weather information. The photo album is a great feature."

     

    New Scientist: "Daily science news and technology news, hot topics, and a comprehensive database of science jobs and technology jobs."

     

    Nova Online - Documentary Series Companion: "Seen in more than 100 countries, NOVA is the most watched science television series in the world and the most watched documentary series on PBS. It is also one of television's most acclaimed series."

     

    NSF and the Birth of the Internet: "Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, this special reprot provides an engaging, detailed account of the development of the Internet. It begins with information about the roots of the Internet in the 1960s, continues through the present time and speculates about the future."

     

    Open Access e-Journals: ArXiv is an open access, full-text e-print service in the fields of physics, mathematics, non-linear science, computer science, quantitative biology and statistics. AarXiv is owned, operated and funded by Cornell University, and also partially funded by the National Science Foundation.

     

    President's Council On Bioethics: The Council advises the President on ethical issues related to advances in biomedical science and technology. The Bioethics Council is concerned with the following issues: human cloning, stem cells, patenting human life, biotechnology and public policy, sex selection, and bioethics in literature.

     

    Research and Documentation Online: Online version of "Research and Documentation in the Electronic Age" by Diana Hacker. It contains research guides to Humanities, Social Sciences, History, and Sciences.

     

    San Diego Supercomputer Center: "SDSC supports several of America's largest, fastest and most capable research-oriented computational environments, which are specifically designed to help scientists apply technology to advance science."

     

    Science Daily: "Science Daily is an online magazine and web portal presenting news releases in science, medicine, and technology. Universities and other research organizations submit the news releases. Each is posted in its original form, with a contact name and link to the organization's home page. There is a searchable archive."

     

    Science Online: "Science Online allows you to see the tables of contents of several publications of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. You can search for articles in these journals and a wide range of other science journals. In many cases, abstracts are provided, but full text is limited to journal subscribers."

     

    Scientific Psychic: Created and maintained by Programmer Antonio Zamora of the American Chemical Society, "Scientific Psychic is a web site dedicated to the exploration of language and the human mind with the objective of encouraging critical thinking and a healthy life style." Click the links on the home page to find sections on ESP, mind puzzles, personality tests, health and educational software programs.

     

    Smithsonian Encyclopedia: The Smithsonian Institute has developed an A-Z encyclopedia that includes information in the following general categories: Art; Design; History; Culture; Science; and Technology. Search over 2 million records, with 210,500 images, video and sound files from dozens of Smithsonian museums, archives, and libraries.

     

    Understanding Science: Produced by the Museum of Paleontology of the University of California at Berkeley and funded by the National Science Foundation, this site provides a fun, accessible, and free resource that accurately communicates what science is and how it really works.

     

    USGS Library: This site provides USGS reports on earth science. Most publications located at this site and other USGS sites can be located by subject, author, date, USGS series or publication series number by using the reports and thematic maps electronic Publications Warehouse.


    Why Files: Science Behind The News: "The Why Files is a searchable database of articles explaining the science behind everyday news stories. (check out the cool images!) The archives are browsable by subject or theme and there are links to help match current science topics to educational standards by grade level." This site is supported by the University of Wisconsin Graduate School.
