Please be on time. Attendance and prerequisites will be checked during the first 15 minutes of the meeting. Information will not be repeated for late arrivals.
Folsom Lake College room FL2-239. is located in the Reading, Writing and Math lab in Building 2, top floor, north end.
The course is based on a student workbook that was designed to be used in a self paced course. The workbook has 13 required units with 5 tests and a final exam. The first unit reviews basic math skills: fractions, decimals, percents, and applications. The remaining units are designed to have the students master most of the basic background information for the first 4 chapters of a Beginning Algebra text. Each unit takes a specific skill used in Beginning Algebra and develops the concept with short clear written descriptions of the skill to be mastered. Numerous examples are used to help develop the concept further. Then an extensive practice section follows that gives the student ample practice time to master the material. Answers to all the problems in the workbook follow each unit. If a student needs to work with an instructor there are days and times each week where the students can get individual attention and help. After the student has completed a given set of units they then come to FLC for on campus testing. There are several days and times that are available for testing and a student may use any of them that work for thier schedule. Please check the testing days and times to be sure you can attend at the listed times. No other days or times are available.
All work for each unit is done in the workbook. A test review must be downloaded and completed in addition to the homework. The student should read the introduction to the unit and carefully look at the worked out examples. The student should then work out all the problems for that concept and check for correctness by comparing their answer to the answers at the end of the chapter. At the end of each unit there are a couple of pages of review to help prepare for the unit test. After the student has completed the unit work for each test and completed the downloaded test review they can come in to the Folsom Lake College in room FL2-239. This is the Reading, writing and Math lab (building 2, top floor, north end). All work must be completeed in the book and the online review must be completed with the required work shown before you will be allowed to test. Bring the book and the online review to the test. Please check the testing days and times to be sure you can attend at the listed times. No other days or times are available.

Pre Algebra, A Student Workbook for Beginning Algebra (Yellow Edition)
How to Purchase Text
The Pre Algebra text can be purchased at one of the locations below
One of the fundamental purposes of this course is to strengthen your basic mental skills in the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and signed numbers. When a student's mental skills are developed to a high level the work in this course and the next algebra course becomes much easier. For that reason NO CALCULATORS are allowed in the course. The problems in the workbook deal with simple fractions and decimals. The signed numbers are small numbers most often under 20.Students are encouraged to practice the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts until they have been committed to memory.
A student may work at the pace they choose as long as the first deadlines are met but the course materials must be completed and the final taken by the last day of instruction. Do not put off your work and then ask for additional time. Grades will be submitted at the end of final week based on the percent of the total points you have. Most students finish Chapters 1 and 2 in the first week of the course and take the test by the end of the first week.
Math 30 is a course in Pre algebra mathematics with the emphasis on the fundamental operations on
integers and how they are applied to expressions, exponents and the solution of equations and inequalities.
The major emphasis of the course is to prepare you for a highly successful experience in Math 100 next
semester. A more specific breakdown of topics can be found in the College Handbook. It is highly
recommended that you see a counselor as part of your college planning.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
* simplify expressions with rational coefficients.
* solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable involving rational numbers.
* solve applied problems using rational numbers, variable expressions, scientific notation, equations,
geometric formulas, measurement conversions, proportions, and percent.
* graph linear inequalities in one variable and linear equations in two variables.
* The course is intended to increase your mental ability to perform basic operations on the integers, thus
no calculators or tables are allowed.
It is expected that all students will follow the college standards of conduct found in the FLC College catalog. Be sure to read these rules. You will be held accountable for knowing and following them.
Some of the specific rules of student conduct include:
1. Students are expected to do their own work for all parts of this class. A student ID is required for testing.
2. No calculators, notes, cell phones , textbooks or other testing aids are allowed during tests.
3. No notes may be taken during the test
4. You are not allowed to talk to anyone during the test except to ask the instructor a question.
5. Any attempt to help others prepare for the test based on information you gained during the test is considered cheating.
6. Inappropriate use of any college resource, computers, servers, computer network or e-mails will result in being automatically dropped from the course with an F grade.
Any student caught violating any of these rules will be given a F for the entire unit they are working on. They may also be given an F grade for the entire course depending on the instructors determination of the severity of the offense. An example of this is using cheat notes on the test or attempting to take any test information with you after the test . They may also be referred to the Vice President of Student Services for disciplinary action that may include dismissal from the college.
